The Charcoal Grill

The Charcoal Grill first opened it’s doors on Cross St in September 2000. Slowly we became popular & Galway became a more multicultural city where Turkish kebabs appealed to all our new nationalities. We choose the name “ The Charcoal Grill” as this was the name of the restaurant in which i worked in London & also where I met an Irish girl called Sinead who was later to become my wife.

Our menu was very similar as it is today, simple with something for everyone. Our aim is to provide quality kebabs & fast food at reasonable prices in a comfortable friendly setting. Our kebabs have always been prepared by Turkish Trained chefs in our restaurants & we will only use the freshest of locally sourced produce. Mary St Charcoal opened its doors in Febuary 2007 & was a success from the start thankfully as we had made a good name for ourselves in Galway. Our latest shop opened its door in Prospect hill in July 2010. Thanks to our hard working staff & loyal customers we are still serving authentic Turkish kebabs in Galway.

The Doner

The doner kebab is a traditional Turkish dish in which the meat originally rotated vertically on a spit. Iskender Efendi from the 19th century living in Bursa Turkey claimed that he and his grandfather had the idea of roasting the meat vertically rather than horizontally as was done prior to this. This in turn made for a more moist kebab and in time it got a marinade and took on it’s familiar shape of today. The modern fast food doner was invented Mahmut Aygun a Turkish immigrant in Berlin in 1971. Traditionally the doner meat was served on a bed of rice but Aygun had the idea that substituting the starches and replacing the rice with a pitta pocket made for an easily transportable feast. Especially usefull when wandering home from a night out! The first doner in a pitta which we are all familiar with was served in his restaurant ‘Hasir’ in Berlin on March 2nd 1971.
